Cafetière

Coffee made easy. Follow these simple steps: add, pour, stir, steep, press, for a bold, fresh cup from your cafetière!

What You'll Need

  • Cafetière (French press)
  • Coarse-ground coffee beans
  • Hot water (just below boiling, around 93°C or 200°F)
  • Spoon or stirrer
  • Timer

Step 1

Boil Water

Bring water to a boil, then let it sit for 30 seconds to cool slightly. Ideal temperature is just below boiling, around 93°C (200°F).

Step 2

Measure Coffee

Use 1 tablespoon (about 7-8 grams) of coarse-ground coffee per 125 ml (4 oz) of water. Adjust based on your taste preferences.

Step 3

Add Coffee Grounds

Place the measured coffee grounds into the bottom of the cafetière.

Step 4

Pour Hot Water

Slowly pour hot water over the coffee grounds, covering them evenly. Fill the cafetière up to your desired level (based on the amount of coffee you want to brew).

Step 5

Stir The Coffee

Stir gently with a spoon to make sure the coffee grounds are fully saturated.

Step 6

Let It Steep

Place the lid on the cafetière but don’t press the plunger down yet. Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes. If you prefer a stronger brew, you can let it steep for an extra minute.

Step 7

Press The Plunger

Slowly and evenly press the plunger down to separate the coffee grounds from the brewed coffee.

Step 8

Serve And Enjoy

Pour your freshly brewed coffee into a cup and enjoy it immediately. Avoid leaving coffee in the cafetière for too long as it can become bitter.

Barista's Top Tips

  • Use coarse coffee grounds for better extraction and to avoid grounds slipping through the filter.
  • Clean your cafetière thoroughly after each use to prevent old coffee oils from affecting the taste of your next brew.
